Alabama Iota History

The chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon here on the campus of Birmingham-Southern College is known as the Alabama Iota chapter. Alabama Iota was founded in November 23, 1878. It was the twenty-eighth chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon founded in the nation. The Alabama Iota chapter here on campus has initiated around 2,230 young men since it was founded. Until 2001, the Alabama Iota chapter was the only chapter to win the John O. Moseley Award for Fraternity Zeal. This award is given to the chapter which best exemplifies loyalty, zeal and devotion. Alabama Iota recently won the Province Award for Community Service in 2004.

Alabama Iota is fortunate enough to have several SAE alumni on staff at the college. Dr. Neal R. Berte, Immediate Past President of BSC, was at the helm from February 1, 1976 until his retirement in 2004 (a milestone for any campus President). Keith D. Thompson is Assistant Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Dr. Stewart Jackson is Dean of the Chapel. In addition, over 1,000 living alumni reside in the Birmingham Area, many of them being from Alabama Iota.
