OUR MISSION

The mission of Sigma Alpha Epsilon is to promote the highest standards of friendship, scholarship, and service for our members based upon the ideals set forth by our Founders and as specifically enunciated in the The True Gentleman.

THE PRINCIPLES OF SIGMA ALPHA EPSILON

1. To develop in our members the skills which will facilitate their making deep and meaningful friendships throughout their lives.
2. To provide our undergraduate members with a physical and organizational environment conducive to their pursuit of academic excellence.
3. To help our members better understand and experience diversity and change to enhance their respect for individuality and personal integrity.
4. To foster personal development of our members including leadership, scholarship, citizenship, and social and moral responsibility.
5. To develop in our members a sense of duty for individual and group involvement in social interactions, service and community outreach.
6. To provide our members with guidance, support and standards based upon the ideals embodied in our Ritual.
7. To develop, maintain and enforce standards and expectations for the conduct of our members within and outside of the Fraternity.
8. To provide our members with life-long fraternal experiences that are productive, rewarding and enjoyable.

GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE

The organization is governed through a five-person executive board called the Supreme Council that is elected at biennial conventions. An executive director, the Eminent Supreme Recorder, supervises a staff of approximately 20 at the Fraternity Service Center in Evanston, Illinois, and eight regional directors. The United States is divided into 30 provinces overseen by regional volunteers called Province Archons. Each chapter is required to have an active chapter advisor or alumni advisory board.

SIGMA ALPHA EPSILON FOUNDATION

The SAE Foundation was established in 1927 to create programs that promote the highest ideals of academic and personal development. The existing programs include named scholarships, a student-loan program, and the John O. Moseley Leadership School that has produced more than 24,000 graduates since 1935. The SAE Foundation awards $95,000 in scholarships annually in support of its mission.

FAST FACTS

SAE is America’s largest social fraternity with more than 283,000 initiated members. Fraternal symbols include the lion, the phoenix, Minerva, and the fleur-de-lis. Sigma Alpha Epsilon was the first fraternity to establish a national headquarters in 1929, a national Leadership School in 1935, a national Men’s Health Issues Committee in 1980 and a career-development program called the Leading Edge in 1990. Currently, the Fraternity offers a comprehensive member-education program called The True Gentleman Initiative. The Fraternity communicates through The Record magazine, a quarterly publication that been published continuously since 1880. New members receive a copy of The Phoenix, the manual of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, for educational development.

SIGMA ALPHA EPSILON IN 2009

  • 216 total chapters, 14 colonies
  • Approximately 11,000 undergraduates
  • Approximately 1,700 pledges
  • Average chapter size, including pledges and actives, is 40 men.
  • Sigma Alpha Epsilon has initiated more than 287,000 men in total.

  • The Fraternity's largest chapters are located at the University of Oklahoma, with 180 members, and Southern Methodist University, with 125 members.

  • There are approximately 185,000 living alumni in the Fraternity.

  • The Fraternity maintains its web presence at www.sae.net, which includes a members-only section for chapter officers and for our online community known as Gentlemen's Circle.

  • The Gentlemen's Circle is an exclusive online community for members, where they can create profiles, share personal information and create networking opportunities. To date, there are more than 17,000 active profiles, 500 events and 15,000 messages on the site from our members who are using it. New for 2009, Gentlemen's Circle and Facebook profiles can be linked together via a tool that helps the programs talk to one another.

  • The website designed exclusively for undergraduate and volunteer resources is called The TGI, which is located at www.TheTGI.net. In 2008, it was completely redesigned. It houses vital resources and documents, which have been downloaded more than one million times since the site first launched.

  • For the third year in a row, the Supreme Council will select 25 top-notch undergraduates to participate in an exclusive leadership training program call the Phoenix Institute, which is scheduled to take place April 3-5 in Chicago, Illinois, and will feature several successful alumni as facilitators.

  • The 73rd Annual John O. Moseley Leadership School took place July 24-28, 2008, on a Carnival cruise ship to Mexico. Nearly 800 members were a part of the experience, which set an all-time record. The 74th School will take place June 11-14, leaving out of the Port of San Diego.

  • The Sigma Alpha Epsilon Foundation will give 65 named merit-based scholarships totaling $95,000 in amounts between $1,000-$5,000, and will also award more that $100,000 through various chapter educational funds.

  • This year, the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Foundation awarded 14 student loans totaling more than $105,000.

  • The organization's magazine, The Record, was voted Greek Magazine of the Year in 2007 and has earned more than 22 awards for excellence in the past three years.

  • The 2007-2008 John O. Moseley Zeal Award winner was Nicholls State University (Louisiana Chi).

  • The 2007 True Gentleman of the Year was Brian Gettinger from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

  • The next True Gentleman Day of Service, partnered with National Youth Service Day, will be April 24-26, 2009. Last year, more than 100 groups participated. Their time resulted in approximately 15,000 man hours of service.

  • The SAE National Amateur Golf Tournament will take place May 28-30, 2009, in Pensacola, Florida.

  • The 153rd Anniversary Convention will be held July 30-August 1, 2009, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

  • The SAE World Series Softball Tournament will take place July 31-August 1, 2009, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
